November News

Well here we are nearing the end of November already! It seems like just yesterday I was complaining about having to see Christmas decorations and commercials before Halloween, and now we are less than a week away from Thanksgiving! So what have we been up to lately?

Well, last Friday, Derrick and I had a dinner/movie date night. We ate Texas-style BBQ at a really good place called Kinders (we also use Kinders marinade a lot when we cook in place of Dale’s sauce, which might only exist in the south because I hadn’t heard of it before I moved to Clemson and they definitely don’t have it out here) and then went to see Thor: The Dark World. It was AWESOME! I’m such a fan of all the Marvel movies (well, maybe not the Hulk, but definitely Avengers, Capt America, andΒ most definitely Iron Man) and I’m also a pretty big Chris Hemsworth fan. It was great though and it had TWO easter eggs after the credits, which makes it even cooler. Excited for Captain America to come out in April and I think we have to wait till 2015 for the next Avengers movie, unfortunately. But I digress.

The rest of the weekend we took it pretty easy, just doing some housework and watching football. I did try a new recipe on Sunday. I made ricotta gnocchi from scratch. I saw a tweet from BHG or the Nest or something and found the recipe and decided to give it a try…using ricotta instead of potato means making the dough became a whole lot easier. Derrick cooked some sausages he got at the butcher counter at the grocery store to go with our gnocchi and it made a pretty tasty meal.

This week, Derrick’s company had a two-day workshop, which kept Derrick really busy (although he did get a few free meals out of the deal!) and he has more visitors next week, so I think he is definitely looking forward to the extra two days for the holiday. My boss was out of town this week and I changed my work schedule so that I can get in a little earlier and leave a little earlier. Most nights I was getting home after 6 and it made it hard to figure out when to go to the gym (or I had to try to get myself out of bed at 530 in the morning and some mornings that just doesn’t seem so appealing!). I like being able to leave a little earlier so I’m sticking to my new schedule. Work has been kind of slow for me, but I’m working on a research project/product development thing and I have had a lot of setbacks this week. I know that research means a lot of problems and failures before you figure out the right way, but it has been pretty frustrating. This morning, I finally thought I had it all straightened out, but about 30 minutes before I was going to leave, I had a problem with the instrument I use to analyze samples and the 70 samples I had hoped to run over the weekend are now going to have to wait till next week.

But tonight, Derrick and I had another date, but this time to celebrate our 6-month wedding anniversary. Maybe it is totally silly to celebrate it, but it seems like kind of a big deal because I honestly can’t believe it has already been six months (on Monday, but we didn’t want to go to dinner on Monday night) since our wedding. We treated ourselves to sushi, and it has been awhile since I’ve had sushi, so I was very excited about it. I was not disappointed! Our rolls were delicious! But I was pretty stuffed by the end, although I’m pretty proud that we didn’t leave any pieces on the plates πŸ™‚

Yummm! So excited to eat all this sushi!

Phew. Focus Brynna, you're a champ, you can finish your roll!

We don’t have much planned for the rest of the weekend besides the usual watching football and doing odds and ends around the house. We are having Thanksgiving dinner just the two of us this year. It will be weird not being with Derrick’s family, since the past 3 Thanksgivings we have celebrated with them. For Derrick, it will be his first time missing a family Thanksgiving meal, so that’s definitely weird/kind of sad for him. BUT we will enjoy our first Thanksgiving as a married couple and Derrick is even going to cook us a turkey (Also we plan to eat turkey until Christmas probably from the leftovers!).

One other change we’ve had out here is that we are finally getting rain! Everyone promised we would hit rainy season and we apparently finally have. We had rain several days this week, accompanied by some pretty outrageous winds. A few people have died from tree/telephone poles blowing over and I think they said inland closer to where I work, wind speeds were reaching 70 mph yesterday and today! It’s calmed down a bit now but I think we have more rain in our forecast next week, which I am enjoying. I feel now like it is autumn with cool temperatures and rain. Another cool thing about the rain this week was getting to take in the beauty of God’s creation during my daily commutes (and I took these pictures safely, definitely not while operating a motor vehicle…):

Probably can't see it, but it was a double rainbow and it was beautiful

What an awesome visual reminder of God’s faithfulness to His promises and His mercy towards us!

I hope everyone is looking forward to the holiday next week (and hopefully a few extra vacation days!)…if you are venturing out on Black Friday, good luck and don’t get trampled or anything! Happy Thanksgiving Β (a few days early).
